A master of absurdity and nonsense, Lewis Carroll loved to practice verbal tricks. “Hunting for a snark” is his most famous poem, although according to the author, it is rather “poetry” – “agony in verse.” According to the plot, a company of 8 respected citizens and Beaver goes on a hunt for a mystical snark, which no one has ever seen and has no idea who or what it is. The poem consists of 8 chapters (“tales”), the words are often new works by Carroll, and the verses have a semi-meaningless meaning. The events of the poem are mostly devoid of logic, but this is the meaning – because Carroll did not create a poetic masterpiece, but a sample of absurdity.
Until last year, Ukrainians were not able to read “Snark Hunting” in Ukrainian, and finally the book was published by Laurus. The publication is bilingual, so you can also enjoy Carroll’s verbal antics in the original. Illustrations for the book were drawn by Daria Lysenko-Brash, and they perfectly emphasize the phantasmagoric work.
